The four undergraduate specialties in the school include Materials Forming and Controlling Engineering, Metallic Materials Engineering, Polymer Materials and Engineering, Inorganic Nonmetal Materials Engineering. Master's degrees are conferred in a first-level discipline of Materials Science and Engineering and 3 second-level disciplines (Materials Processing Engineering, Materials Science and Materials Physics and Chemistry). The discipline of Materials Processing Engineering was entitled to be the key one of ministry by Armor Industry Group Corporation of China in 1998. Engineer Master's degree is conferred in the discipline of Materials Engineering.
The school has a total of 68 faculty members, including 15 professors, 17 associate professors and 5 senior engineers with 20 of them having Ph. D. degrees and 24 Master degrees.
The school of Materials Science and Engineering is provided with sufficient instrument or equipments for teaching and research. The area of laboratories amounts to be about 7000 m 2 . In addition to routine equipments for testing, analyzing and preparing of materials, it has some top-ranking surface treatment equipments like high energy pulse ion accelerator and high energy pulse beam which are imported from Russia. The laboratory of materials forming and controlling was entitled to be the key lab of ministry in 1993.
We attach importance to education and teaching reform constantly. We implement comprehensive engineering education and give prominence to engineering practice in the talent fostering. In order to achieve the goal of engineering education, the staff rooms have been replaced by 6 professional institutes on which the schooling relies. The teaching and research can coexist and promote mutually.
We have paid more attention to scientific research and accomplished about 100 items of NSFC, 863 project, 973 project, national defense research, province or ministry project and others from corporations since the eighth five-year plan.
We take actively part in the intercommunion and cooperation with foreign counterparts. We have established comprehensive corporation relationships in teaching, research and talent fostering with foreign counterparts like Toyohashi University of Technology, A Alen University , Tomsk University of Technology, Institute of Strength Physics and Materials Science, Russian Academy of Sciences and so on, meanwhile we send staffs to study abroad. We take part in actively joint teaching programs with domestic counterparts like Institute of Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Liaoning Fengge Titanium Corporation, etc.
The development strategy of the school is to boost comprehensively the fostering of applied undergraduate talent, develop energetically the graduate education and serve construction of economics and society by basing itself upon Liaoning and facing the nation with distinct specialty character and prominent discipline advantage.
The faculty members in school of material science and engineering will confront the challenge of economic globalization and education internationalization confidently. We will do our best to contribute to the revival of the Liaoning industry base and Chinese Nation.
School of Materials Science and Engineering was founded in 2004 (formerly as Department of Metal hot working founded in 1985).
