Introduction to Confucius Institute at Tomsk State University


On November 29, 2007, Hanban/Confucius Institute Headquarters signed an official cooperation agreement on Confucius Institute with Tomsk State University. Authorized by Hanban, Shenyang Ligong University, being a concrete operative division, established Confucius Institute jointly with Tomsk State University. On May 28, 2008 the opening ceremony of Confucius Institute was held.

The founding of Confucius Institute of Tomsk State University broadens cooperation between China and Russia in the field of education as well as the understanding among the people of both countries. Furthermore, it offers opportunities for the local people to learn Chinese and culture.

Confucius Institute runs under leadership of director board from Shenyang Ligong University and Tomsk State University. The council meeting is held yearly, two deans of the institute from both side are selected from two universities and they are responsible for routine work and regularly report to the council about running conditions, yearly working plan, financial budgets and final accounts.


The institute staff includes two deans, one secretary, one Chinese teacher and four Chinese volunteers, which operates effectively with a modern cultural media classroom and a library with many columns of books for the teachers and Chinese students.

According to the local condition, the Confucius Institute designs elementary, junior and senior Chinese courses for different levels. It also has a teachers-training course; Chinese level test and study abroad counsel service. In the spare time the institute organizes various cultural activities such as festivals and celebrations, lecture series, Chinese painting and calligraphy expositions, tea arts and singing competitions.

Confucius Institute of Tomsk State University highlights teaching quality and cultural promotion activities, which not only help the Chinese learners study language but understand Chinese traditional culture. It cooperates with the local teachers to carry out Chinese teaching activities, which greatly promotes the cultural exchange and Chinese popularization between China and Russia.
